
Role Purpose
The Berthmaster is responsible for the safe, efficient and welcoming day-to-day operation of the marina. The role involves assisting members and visiting vessels, managing marina services, handling payments, supporting boat movements and helping maintain the marina, equipment and facilities to an appropriate standard. Main Roles and Responsibilities
Marina and Visitor Operations
- Welcome visiting boat owners and assist them in locating and safely using an appropriate berth.
- Issue and collect visitor forms, berthing information and applicable fees.
- Check that vessels are securely moored, particularly following bad weather.
- Take reasonable remedial action where a vessel, berth or mooring presents an immediate risk.
- Inform owners or the Association where damage, unsafe mooring or another concern is identified.
- Help ensure that marina rules and bylaws are followed by members, visitors and contractors.
Customer and Member Service
- Deal with enquiries from members, visitors and the public in person and by telephone.
- Provide clear, helpful and professional information about marina facilities and services.
- Maintain a friendly and welcoming environment for marina users.
- Work cooperatively with other Berthmasters, Association officers, members and service providers.
Payments and Administration
- Accept payments for:
- Membership subscriptions
- Visitor and permanent berthing fees
- Electricity usage
- Fuel
- Boat-hoist services
- Other marina services and charges
- Record and account accurately for all money received through the marina office.
- Complete the required documentation and payment records.
- Collect applicable GFDE charges when visiting vessels enter or leave the pen.
- Take periodic electricity-meter readings, including readings when vacant berths are temporarily occupied, to support accurate billing.
Fuel-Berth Management
- Operate and manage the fuel berth safely and efficiently.
- Dispense fuel and collect the appropriate payments.
- Monitor fuel levels and help ensure adequate stocks are maintained.
- Carry out or arrange routine checks and maintenance associated with the fuel berth.
- Follow all relevant health, safety, environmental and operating procedures.
Boat-Hoist Operations
- Work as part of the trained boat-hoist operating team.
- Assist with the safe lifting, moving and launching of vessels.
- Confirm that all applicable hoist fees have been paid before a vessel is moved.
- Complete required operating and maintenance records.
- Carry out and record routine checks and maintenance procedures relating to the safe operation of the hoist.
- Maintain all required training, authorisations and competencies for continued operation of the equipment.
Marina Maintenance and Facilities
- Carry out routine maintenance and minor repairs around the marina where appropriate.
- Identify and promptly report work requiring specialist contractors or more extensive repairs.
- Help maintain pontoons, berths, equipment, office areas and communal facilities in a safe and presentable condition.
- Ensure toilets and shower facilities are checked and kept clean and tidy as required.
- Report faults, damage, hazards or maintenance concerns without unnecessary delay.
Health and Safety
- Take day-to-day responsibility for the health and safety of themselves and others while carrying out the role.
- Follow the Association’s health and safety policies, operating procedures and risk-control measures.
- Use marina equipment only when trained and authorised to do so.
- Report accidents, near misses, unsafe conditions and defective equipment.
- Take reasonable action to protect people, vessels, marina property and the environment.
General Responsibilities
- Work flexibly as part of the Berthmaster team and provide reasonable cover during holidays, sickness or other absences.
- Maintain relevant training and attend refresher training when required.
- Protect confidential information relating to the Association, its members and marina operations.
- Support the effective running and continued development of Humber Cruising Association.
- Undertake other reasonable duties connected with the safe and efficient operation of the marina.
Working Pattern
The role operates as part of a small Berthmaster team, normally working a 14-days-on, 14-days-off rota from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Some flexibility and additional cover may occasionally be required.
